He was a Nieman Fellow in 1947 at Harvard University where he studied astronomy and physics.Ĭarey traveled to the South Pole and other faraway places while writing about science for the news cooperative.Īfter his retirement, he continued to write and later spent five years as editor of a community newsletter in Arlington, Va.Ĭarey is survived by three daughters, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was 90.Ĭarey worked for 10 years at The Sun in Lowell, Mass., his hometown, before joining the AP in 1940. Carey, who wrote about science, medicine and space during a 34-year career with The Associated Press, died Friday after a short illness.
